Easy 13er (or 14er) in Telluride area?

Hello all,

I'm taking a 1.5 week trip out to the Rico/Telluride area soon and I have some newbies with me who are in decent shape but have little mountain experience. I'm looking for an easy (ie, class 1 or 2) 13er or 14er around the area. Any suggestions? I'd like to turn it into a 3 day or so trip if possible. (Backpack in, camp, day hike the peak, camp, backpack out, etc.)

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks,
Lars

P.S. Also, if anyone knows of good backpacking routes (with or without peaks) in the area that would be great to know as well. Right now my only information comes from a few topo maps and the internet. Thanks!

you could use the woods lake TH for two options.

1. backpack into navajo lake and climb the east ridge of point 13,540 from the rock of the ages saddle.
2. head the other way(west) with intentions of camping around middle/dolores group. the northwest side of the group past the pass south of the 11er flat top peak should be very secluded.

these peaks yet they shouldn't be more than a talus hop or an easy scramble. just don't try to connect the 13ers west of 13,540. that would change things dramatically.

going east from telluride will bring you to some other easier peaks around imogene and black bear passes like trico, chicago and point 13,510B among others. you could easily nab multiple summits in this area. as for camping, don't know the area but something tells me you might have to be creative.....

Nice, that all sounds doable. From intense map study these past few weeks, I know of the places you're talking about.

Thanks Jamie!
