Does anyone know the road conditions for La Plata…Northwest ridge route off Colorado 82 or the Southwest ridge route off County 390. Thinking about doing this on Wed. Weather looks great sunny, mid 40's no wind. I do have a 4WD.
Need a climbing partner? Trying to form a hiking group for an outing?

I drove over Hwy 82 Saturday from Aspen, no problems. 2 Cars were parked at La Plata TH, the side road next to parking lot by highway had snow on it.
Hey there, I climbed La Plata (Southwest Ridge) this past Saturday (10/19) and found the snow conditions to be favorable. The trail head access was mostly clear of snow and our Nissan XTerra had no problems getting to within 100 yards of the start. Hike wise, the snow cover varied from soggy dirt / slush at the bottom to an average of 6 inches of snow near the middle. For the last 1500 vertical feet, the snow was a little more difficult to navigate through as the boulder field was partially covered. Fortunately, the exposed rock was dry and for the most part had good traction which enabled us to keep going. Near the summit, we mostly stayed on the exposed ridge line as the snow drifts to our side were waist deep in some places. We didn't see anyone outside of our group during the entire hike.
