KC-Challenger

Postby Kiefer » Sun Feb 03, 2013 7:28 pm

So in lieu of all the moisture from the storms last weekend, we decided to not do
KC and Challenger. Climbing rime on rock scares me...as you can see from the pic below.
That's solid ice covering the trees.

So,
I'm heading back on Tuesday. Leaving Estes pretty early. I want to be on the trail before sunrise.
Anyone interested?

Yo Kiefer,

It wasnt rime ice, it was more like rime snow (up high at least). Craziest thing I have ever seen, but perhaps more noteworthy, SarahT had never seen anything like it either. We were thinking it was caused by really wet snowfall and then cold temps. Made for some spectacular views though!

I thought it actually took pon purchases quite nicely believe it or not.

Hope you have a good outing.

I would agree with Abe in that "rime snow" or "hoar frost" or whatever you want to call it is actually not too scary to climb on. It actually provides pretty good purchase on the rocks. I've climbed on it two weekends in a row and it makes for some amazing scenery!

Interesting. Thanks, Brian & Abe. I've seen it on that group climb of Uncompaghre with Britt, Darin, Jason on the summit and again on Humboldt. Fact the stuff on Humboldt (about 3 years ago) was as much as 3" thick on some rocks!
Guess I always figured it wasn't all that stable or trustworthy. Always climbing in dry snow, alpine ice, having the wet stuff for a change, really throws some people (myself) for a loop.

I imagine you're used to it up in the PNW eh, Matt?

BTW: Thanks for the trail lower down in Spanish, Abe! 8)

Thanks, Jim. That's actually Mtn Nut!
He was good enough to deal with my indecision of plans of climbing that stuff.
We tried instead for Blanca but the upper basin got whollped with a ton of snow.
Having no snowshoes, well...no summit.

Kiefer - 4 of us made it up KC yesterday and 2 of us continued over to Challenger. The conditions were good and there is a trench. Best of luck if you go! PM me if you have any specific questions.
