Last year was my first year in the backcountry. Wow skiing down mountains is kind of the best thing ever! I took AIARE I, but feel like I could use some more practice searching for buried backpacks, so actually if anybody wants to find a day to do some beacon/probe/digging practice, I'd be down.

I'd love to learn from others about safety, technique and HOW TO FIND THE GOODS. Especially in the Indian Peaks and Rocky Mountain NP!

Definitely Sara! We still need to ski a couloir from the top  I'd be down for getting out and practicing some safety techniques as well, can never have too much of that. My friend Mike and I will probably be getting out there a ton, there are a million awesome things to ski back in there, you'll have to come with us sometime!

Wow, that looks great - thanks for the heads up! I'll try to change my calendar to be there as well.

That's my plan. A little dangerous, because it's the day after I get paid  and I might be tempted to write checks my grad school budget can't cash...

Great showing last night at Neptune. It was nice to see Otina (thanks again for the heads up), Caroline and several other people that I knew. It was not really a ladies night with a lot of guys in attendance. I happened to be seated next to Chisty's mom & dad - just a lucky draw, so got to chat to them a bit. Obviously they are very proud of their daughter, as they should be.

Well I'd love to get out later this winter/spring! If anyone doesn't mind traveling with a backcountry newb then I'd love to tag along. I'm a pretty good resort skier.. but I've got a ton to learn in the back country. Hopefully by Spring I'll have some avy training and decent avy gear..

I've got a few years of backcountry skiing under my belt, and all the avy tools and training. I'm new to the region and living near Vernal, UT, so I'd love to meet folks that are interested in BC skiing around Steamboat, Aspen, or if anyone has plans to check out the La Sals near Moab! I'll drive pretty far on a Friday night to meet new people and get some good turns in. Also, I'm definitely interested in getting into more serious skiing, on steeper terrain, etc.

Hey! I'm up for sunday and have been itching to go explore that area. I splitboard or snowshoe depending on the group/conditions. I don't need a summit descent just looking to have some fun, dig some pits, recon, etc. Call or text if this sounds good to you, Alex 303-579-7381 Thanks!

Be careful! I was up there today, dug three pits on <30 degree slopes on E-SE aspects. Two were pencil-hard wind slab (25 and 40 cm) atop about 25 cm of facets the other (in the trees) was hand-hard fluff (35 cm) over facets. The hand-hard fluff failed upon isolating the block and the two wind slabs failed with one soft and three soft hand taps (both Q1 obviously).

I also had a couple of collapses on flatter ground and some softer whumphing but I didn't really see any signs of natural avys.

It's a bit different from last weekend.
The mountains - whose summits reach or exceed arbitrary thresholds for elevation and prominence - are calling and I must go.

Thanks DaveB, I'm definitely aware of the weak to very weak structure out there and really appreciate you sharing your local findings. So far this year I've done alot more ascending than descending...dreaming of teton pass...AK
