Is that a dog-specific bag or just a light people bag?

It's my wife's old synthetic bag. When we got the second dog, we moved up to a 3-person tent and they share a bag in the middle.

This is Lucy taking in the view. We will both be attempting our first 14er tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have an even better picture in 24 hours!

New Hope Cattle Dog Rescue

I got Zion from a shelter when he was six months old and he's been my best friend ever since. He's getting a little older now and slowing down a bit, so we've had to cut back. But once snow comes along, he's like a puppy again.

I'm currently on the hunt for the perfect dog to accompany me on long runs and hikes. any suggestions? I'm not in any hurry to pick a dog, but i really want one that LOVES to be outside with me. I do run 5+ miles a pop each morning, but will be in an apt for a year until i buy a house next year.

A Rhodesian Ridgeback or a Belgian Malinois would be able to keep up with you. I have a Mal... best dog ever!

This is true. The rescue we got our dog from also fought to stay the primary contact for the microchip contact with us, the owners, being the secondary.

I (and my wife with me) tend to move around a bit, it would be stupid to have a CO rescue, in a constant state of fiscal uncertainty, as the main contact when we're living in Montana or wherever the hell we go next.

Nevertheless, the rescue did bring our dog in from a Missouri shelter where she was on a kill list.

Our Golden Retriever, Nala, loves to run and be outside. She hasn't climbed any 14ers yet, but maybe next summer!

I'm sorry that I don't have any pet dogs to climb with. I'm stuck climbing with my own two dogs, known as my feet, and boy are they barking at the end of a hike!

The nice, gentle, community feel was nice while it lasted. Shocked--shocked I tell you!--to see who brought it down.

I'm all for the humane society (though definitely NOT the HSUS--whoooole other can of worms there), but breed rescues can be incredibly helpful and supportive. "Why does my recently-off-the-track greyhound stare at me while I sleep?" Not that a grey org would allow a grey (and I know a lot of breed-specific rescues are similar) to end up in a random shelter, but do you think a random shelter is going to know that the answer is, "your dog has never seen a sleeping human and is worried his new caretaker is now DEAD"?

Sometimes applications and interviews and home visits prevent the wrong people (take that how you will) from ending up with an animal they're not prepared to take care of. That, in the end, is better for the animal in question. Pretty friggin' simple.

Please all, disregard the attempted derailing and keep on posting pics of all those wonderful hounds (and gatos)!!

EDIT: Oh, and to the runner--definitely look into a Rhodesian (a Vizsla also a good possibility).
