Photo stitching software

Postby mikemalick » Sat Oct 08, 2011 2:54 pm

For those of you that want nice panoramic shots, but don't have the right camera/gear, this may be an option for you if you are running a Windows OS. It is a freebie (unsupported) product from Microsoft called Microsoft Image Composite Editor. Here is the home page for it: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ice/

I'm running the 64-bit version of it on Win7. There is a lot you can do with it and can also upload to their Photosynth site (haven't done that yet).

Due to the dimensions constraints on 14ers.com, I had to really shrink these images down so they do not look the best and I also didn't take as many pics as I should have to fill in all the vertical holes, but you get the idea.

Here is one I did from last weekend's trip up Mt Yale:

Here is a full 360 degree pano stitched together using the tool from the summit of Mt Yale:

You literally only have to drop all the photos onto the design surface of the tool and it handles figuring everything out.

Enjoy!

For us dorks with iPhones, you can download Photosynth on the app store for free. Rotate your camera and it auto shoots and stiches.

Another free option is autostitch. It's a good program as well. Not as many options as Microsoft ICE, but seems to do a better job with the seams.

I use both, on photos where one program fails it seems the other succeeds.

You also get my vote for the best screen name I've seen in a long time.

Sounds pretty cool what you can do with that iPhone. Hopefully when I upgrade to a Win 7.5 phone they will have something similar to stitch right on the phone itself.

I'm not a Mac person so I don't know. Considering there is stuff built right into the iPhone, I would have to think there are options for Mac users. Check out this wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_photo_stitching_applications
