Southern Gore Conditions?

Postby OmahaAdam » Wed May 30, 2012 6:50 pm

Called the Dillon ranger office today for some conditions info on Red Peak & Red Buffalo Pass right there next to Silverthorne. They seemed to be short on details so has anyone else seen that area or have any info on what the snow conditions are or aren't?

Still a decent amount of snow on the ridges and in the bowls above treeline. Below treeline should be dry, though, and Buffalo looks like a go.

Personally I'm waiting a couple more weeks on the Gores.

Kimo and I hiked Red Pk B on Monday from Meadow Creek TH.
No snowshoes needed. Some snow before Eccles Pass down low in the trees. From the pass down to Red Buffalo Pass is mostly all snow, but supportable even later in the afternoon.
The S ridge is dry.
No technical gear needed.
Long route but worth it.
Stats per Kane on SP are ~14mi RT & 4950' elevation gain.

I've also been in 4 Gore drainages in the past week or two.
Booth had snow along the trail about a mile or so beyond the waterfall and continued to treeline. Firm snow for the most part.
Pitkin was dry to the falls, spotty above and beyond the bench above the falls. Continuous further up. But firm.
(N) Rock Creek was pretty dry until well into the deeper parts of the southern flanks of Keller. ;)
Deluge was dry for the first couple of miles and then we lost the trail in the snow. But we still found our way to Deluge Lake and above.

Most lakes are still frozen over.

Meadow Creek TH is exactly what I was looking at. Couldn't ask for better, timelier beta - thanks guys. Great pics, the Gore looks beautiful.

Getting high in the Gore right now is down right wicked. The snow on the peaks make them all look sweet. Go get it!

Thanks for the tips, all. Got back to Omaha late Thursday night after 3 nights around Buffalo and Red Peaks along the Mesa Cortina and Gore trails. Good times with my oldest daughter.
