Hiking suggestions near Telluride?

Postby ohiogirl » Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:37 pm

Hi! I'll be in Telluride next week with about 80 other skiers from Cleveland (2 ski clubs!). We're taking a couple days off from skiing to do other activities, such as hiking. Does anyone have suggestions for a nice, not too difficult, winter hike? Are there any "must see" areas/trails? If you just had time to hike one, which one would it be? Lizard head trail? Bear Creek? Any area have more wildlife sighting potential (other than in the bars! :D ) ?

Bear Creek Trail starts at the end of S. Pine Street on the lower end of town, you could walk to the TH from just about anywhere in town. I'd pick this one due to ease of access, it's a fun hike/snowshoe.
We did not think of the great open plains, the beautiful rolling hills, and winding streams... as "wild". Only to the white man was nature a "wilderness".
