Needle rescue underway
From Custer County S&R:
"Custer SAR has fielded a hasty team to assist two stranded climbers on Crestone Needle. The pair spent the night on the peak after summitting via the Arete route at 21:30. Additional local resources are arriving to assist."
May everyone return safely...

Re: Needle rescue underway
Encouraging update:
"The CCSAR hasty team is with the subjects in the East Couloir on Crestone Needle. They are in good condition. Additional team members are standing by near Broken Hand Pass to assist as the climbers are brought down."

Re: Needle rescue underway
Oh jeez, very glad they're safe!
Me and a partner climbed the arete a few weeks ago, and sloppy new snow and ice on the headwall made it feel several grades harder than it should have been. Snow climbing in rock shoes, chipping ice out of cracks to place pro, loooong runouts on insecure climbing... turned into kind of a mini epic. Didn't summit until 7:00 PM, and camp to car was over 18 hours. The funny thing was from the basin below, it looked like the route was basically snow free, so I fully understand how a party could get in a little over their heads with the current conditions.

Re: Needle rescue underway
9:30pm is a late topout. That's many hours after I've decided I'm climbing the route @ 5.4 C1.
Hope everyone's OK, including SAR. Maybe the downclimb's a little hairy?

Re: Needle rescue underway
Saw them walking down with two SAR members approaching Broken Hand Pass, looked like everyone was OK. Another SAR team had pulled up, but I don't think they were needed.

Why did they need SAR? Was there any injury?

Dude, give it a rest. I am sure if they wanted you to know the details, they would post them.
