Which pack in in two weeks?

Post by 14erobsessedkansan »

Which of these pack in opportunities would likely be most comfortable camping in mid October -- Missouri Gulch or the creek area towards Holy Cross? As in tree cover, water availability, exposure to weather and temperature etc. I'm guessing the creek?

They have about identical weather... so obviously watch that real close.

In my opinion.. depends on how you are getting up to Missouri/Belford/Oxford vs The standard route to Holy Cross... how much time you have etc. Holy Cross with the long up/down/up type of approach.. and Missouri staircase up from Clear creek side both have alot of cover. until 12 something. anything in trees will likely still have some leaves left unless snow dings em all off. Not much camping cover up high on either once past a certain point / treeline. both have water until high. Have you considered Belford/Oxford from Pine Creek trail? That one offers killer out of way approaches and lots of camping past the Colorado trail intersection. Camp nearly wherever and follows a river all the way up. Non standard approaches to Belford/Oxford if you look close.. over Elkhead Pass. Watch the weather. My $.02.

Both would work, but if it snows, the road to the Holy Cross trailhead will be more problematic.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Utah should be a very comfortable alternative in October if it becomes cold and snowy in Colorado.
