Longs Via Keyhole This Sunday....Advice Welcome

Postby boogeybrigade » Thu Oct 25, 2012 7:02 pm

Coming out to the the mountains this weekend and plan on climbing Longs Peak via the Keyhole route Sunday. Never climbed longs before. I always wanted to do the climb for my first time in the winter season. I figure this is close enough. Just seeing if anyone has any advice. Should be good on clothing, water, and food. Just curious on footwear for right now. Thinking either lighter boots with just some micro spikes, or the heavier boots with some crampons for traction. I suppose as of now it's just a guessing game as to what the conditions will be like on Sunday. From the sounds of it snow shoes wont be necessary. Depending on how we feel, we may break the climb up in 2 days by camping at the bolder field. Sounds like that seems to be a good place to set up a camp. Any advice welcome! Cant wait for the torture!!! [-o<

I think you need a reservation to camp at the boulder field - you might want to look into that.

Since it's now October, I'm about 80% sure you no longer need to pay for a permit.
I believe the NPS still requires you to register either at the Backcountry Office or self-register at the TH.
But no fee. Peak season has come & gone.
