Missouri Gulch TH/Road Info?

Post by Zambo »

Happy New Year everyone!

We've got a group kicking around the idea of a Belfox attempt soon, and I'm wondering if anyone has been up the CR 390 road recently. Based on all the digging around I've done, it looks like the winter maintenance ends approx 4 miles below the summer TH. From previous TRs, most people seem to be able to 4wd approx 1-2 miles past that.

Anyways, I am just wondering if anyone has been up that way in the past couple of weeks, and how far we could expect to 4wd up the road (if at all). Any info will be very much appreciated - thanks!

We were just up there this morning and you're absolutely right, road maintenance ends on CR 390 4 miles before you reach the trailhead. And it stopped us in our tracks too. Driving a 4wd Grand Cherokee did not get us more than 300 yards or so past the end of road maintenance. So, if you're wanting to hike Belford or Oxford this winter, plan on an extra 4 mile hike to get to the trailhead or make other snow travel arrangements. We were wishing we'd had a snowmobile to get us that extra 4 miles, otherwise it doubled our mileage for the day.

Agree with above. The smart thing to do is to park right at the ranch turnoff, just past it, at the top of the hill. You can get a little further, though. Drive about 1/4 - 1/2 mile beyond that, and look for a large tree on the left. The sun comes in and melts the snow there, so you can turn around there pretty easily. You know when you've gone past it; the road descends to the drainage. There it gets cold and the snow is less consolidated. That's where most folks end up turning around or getting stuck or both.
