From my understanding we can drive to the 4wd TH, set up camp, then Sunday have a 3.25 mile hike to Summit? No backpacking in to campsite? We would be CAR CAMPING?
No...we will have to backpack 4.2 miles from County Rd 20 up the Nellie Creek Rd (4WD rd) to the TH. From there its 3.25 more miles.

I hiked up from the bottom of the road this summer because I don't have a 4wd, I was carrying full backpacking gear, be warned the road is not as easy as you might think, let alone with snow on it.

Would have loved to have gone on this trip but I have been fighting a respiratory thing + sinus infection so I haven't even hiked the last 3 weeks. :( Hope you all have/had a great time. Uncompahgre is a pretty awesome sight from almost the beginning of the trail (summer trail, that is)

Thanks Steve for leading this trip! It was great fun as well as a challenge. Your leadership, knowledge, and calmness/confidence in everything makes all the difference. Thank you so much for setting this up and doing this trip.

To those interested...

We had 18 people show up & stay the night in "Camp Uncompahgre" There were tents all over up there at the upper 4WD TH!

And 11 people braved the wind/white out conditions to make the summit!

The average times were approximately 3 1/2 hours to hike the 4WD road and approximately 5 hours from camp to summit. Most of us were on the summit between 11 and 11:30am.

It was around 5pm by the time we hiked back, tore down camp, and made it back to the cars. It made for a long, hard day. But well worth! I hope someone will do a trip report. Whose game?

It was a really good couple of days.
-The hike on the 4WD rd. was shorter than expected and thanks to all who broke trail before us.
-As for summit day, I say it was one of my most challenging. Reflecting back I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I ate very little between breakfast and summit; I should have downed my gel shots and energy gummies. #-o
-Good meeting a lot of you.
-Trip report...my story telling skills really aren't that great.
-For the record my GPS shows 5235 in elevation gain and 14.5 miles.

Steve, thanks again for setting this up! I had a good time, and I enjoyed everyone's company and meeting new people.

Here's a few pictures:

Saturday afternoon, Kiefer, myself, Steve & Cooper, and Mike ventured out of camp to break some trail. We're likely the only ones (other than K Nolan) to see this through the whole weekend....

Great meeting you all. That was one tough trip for me. Thanks to all who offered advice and a helping hand when needed. I am thankful for the safe return of all who ventured out and that the outhouse was open!

Wooh! There was a lot of expertise out in those hills this weekend. Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge, stories, and funky-flavored schnapps! My best shot of the day features our fearless leader and Cooper on the summit with COBuckeye and Zoriloco.
