Bierstadt gigapixel pano

Postby MIT » Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:41 pm

Here is a link to a 2 gigapixel spherical panorama I shot on Bierstadt on Friday June 12, 2009. It was windy as heck, so my wife had to hold the tripod down while I shot. You can zoom in an see the Sawtooth and surrounding peaks in quite a bit of detail. Let me know what you think! http://media.cjaskolski.com/Bierstadt/Bierstadt_Pano.html
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche

Sweet. How does one do that?

Awesome! What camera / lens did you use, and how many shots did it take to create that?

Not that I have any plans to go shoot something like that but I'd be very interested in the technology behind it as well. I assume there must some sort of custom pano head involved in order to do that many shots precisely. Guessing that's over 200 shots? How is it stitched together?

So far i think only a select group has access to the hardware needed to do this and the stitching software.

The stitching software is commonly available... both commercially and free. Runs on any capable PC (Mac too, probably). Autostitch works pretty well and it's free:

Chris-

Do you have any experience with the stitching software? Better/Worse than Adobe Photoshop Elements (5.0)? I have recently decided I am quite unsatisfied with its autostitching function.

Also, my 2 cts, the sky is the coolest part of that image... i feel like i'm at an imax or trapped inside a snow globe.

addendum: zoom all the way in and you can see a bulldozer on the summit of evans. saweet.
