Conditions on Harvard?

Postby goatgirl » Sat May 30, 2009 8:38 am

Hi Everyone. We'll be climbing Mont Blanc this summer and were looking at getting some training in on Harvard and Columbia soon. Anybody know how it's looking up there? Thanks in advance...

I was just up there for the past 3 days, trip report coming soon. There's still lots of snow below treeline and on the mountain, although now that it froze we were able to travel without snowshoes without too much trouble. Use careful routefinding in the trees as there is a maze of bootpacks which appear and dissapear, leading you all over the place.

How was the road to the TH? Conquerable by a 2WD would you say?

i tackled the road in a forester, i'm not so sure about 2wd. Most of the road is a little rocky but doable with 2wd, however there is one spot where a culvert washed out that could be a little tricky...you could probably do it as long as you take a good line, but may bottom out. Clearance is the real issue, not the extra traction of AWD or 4wd.

trip report is up http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=6008

i don't think snowshoes are worth the weight as long as it gets cold overnight. We needed crampons for our route, i'm not sure about the standard route- I would bring them just in case, there's a lot of snow up there.

I can't imagine that conditions have changed a lot since I was up there. A fairly poor (self admitted) TR on my attempt of Columbia is on my website in my signature. Basically like the above posted stated, there is a LOT of snow in the trees. I needed to consult my GPS several times to make sure I was on the right trail. The snow makes for a very tiring ascent in one day. We packed up snowshoes but did not use them.
