Handies Group From Silverton? Subaru or 4WD?

Postby Keyser Soze » Mon May 25, 2009 6:26 pm

Hope not too much of a bonehead question... mapping a coming trip and wondering the best way to climb Redclound and Sunshine with the goal of getting to to Durango the following morning.

Looks like Mill Creek trailhead is doable with the Subaru (not an Outback, so no improved clearance) but the drive to Durango looks daunting that night/the next day from Lake City.

Reading Roach, it says the route from Durango/Silverton requires 4WD... does it? I can take the Landcruiser but gas mileage is miserable... just trying to get an idea of the time from each to Durango... and any other advice is appreciated. Vacation time is valuable... trying to get as much time in the mountains as possible... and not in the car.

Thanks!

If time and money are valuable to you, suck it up and take the Landcruiser.
Regardless of which pass you're considering (Engineer or Cinnamon), that's the best advice anyone can give you.
There are several threads buried on this site with extensive discussions of this issue. Good luck.
