In this instance it would be more like finding an overcammed #1 stuck in a crack. By all laws of ethics that's considered booty!

Oh, and here's a delightful discussion on the forgetting/leaving of property in the mountains.
The mountains - whose summits reach or exceed arbitrary thresholds for elevation and prominence - are calling and I must go.

Are you taking those?

"Uh, not if you're here."

Sarcasm or not, it's not even funny to post something like this. Not at this time. Reported.

I guess some of you are hypocrites.

How many of you leave/stash your snowshoes at treeline?

I can see the next thread here being from a newb: "Hey look at these cool showshoes someone abandoned at treeline on Quandary! I heard it was OK to take them - yay me!"

1. You didnt know they had been there for a week
2. That s**t didnt belong to you - period. It's not the same as picking up a dropped Clif bar wrapper and bringing it down off the mountain...

But I'll answer your question:
Maybe the other glove was picked up by a Marmot or Pika and carried off - or hell it's Bierstadt - it probably blew away...
Maybe someone was ferrying gear up there because they got permission to build a memorial on the peak/trail...

It was someone else's GEAR - you should have left it alone - you dont know why it was there/when someone was coming back to get it etc...

Or you could have taken a pic and marked your GPS and THEN come and posted about it...

Based on the evidence put forth earlier it sounds like he was fairly certain it had been there a decent amount of time. Absolute certainty? Maybe not, but still fairly certain. The memorial thing, while possible, seems a bit far fetched.

Take it or leave it, literally, I don't think there is much harm done and ultimately it worked out. He made a strong effort to locate the owners and they were very grateful.

Also, the guy HAD left the stuff there because he needed to descend quickly so it WAS a good thing he brought it down to return it to the owner.

I don't see anywhere here where Jeff said he intended on keeping the stuff - not sure why we're now worried about anyone thinking it's okay to reclaim stashed snowshoes...

This thread is getting ridiculous. It was originally started to find the owner. He's been found.
You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know. - Rene Daumal

Jeezus - let it go, man. You may not personally approve of the actions taken but that doesn't make those actions wrong! Anyways, it's between Jeff and the property Owner - not those who have the benefit of third-party hindsight. But if you are so up for not moving it in the first place, I know where Jeff is keeping the clown board and ear buds - perhaps you should volunteer to take it back?

Not I. Only used snowshoes on one occasion. Turned around well below treeline having learned my lesson.
