Good peaks near Steamboat Springs?

Postby Everett » Mon Jul 02, 2007 3:24 pm

Hi y'all,

I'm going to be in Steamboat Springs for a week in mid-August, and I'm wondering if there are any good peaks there (don't have to be 13/14) that a fit person could climb in a day. It's been too long (i.e., 7 years) since I climbed anything west of the Mississippi, much less above 5,000 feet, and I REALLY would like to get up above the treeline and get a glimpse of infinity.

Basically, I'm looking for a mountain that I can climb in a day without technical gear, and which is accessible from Steamboat. I don't mind getting up before dawn, so it doesn't have to be terribly close by, but I'm hoping it might be within 30-40 miles by car (picky, I know!).

A non-Coloradan I know recommended Parkview Mountain, but I thought I'd ask here as well. If you have any recommendations for such a climb (or can comment on Parkview), please let me know.

Parkview Mountain is no where near Steamboat Springs. It's over there just west of Rocky Mountain National Park and a lot more than 30-40 miles.

Here are some peaks that are close to fairly close (and there are a lot more than these):

Elkhead Mountains: ... -peak.html ... ntain.html ... -peak.html ... -ears.html ... ntain.html

Flat Tops: ... -peak.html ... tops-.html ... seway.html ... peaks.html ... ntain.html

Park Range: ... irkel.html ... ntain.html ... agnes.html ... ntain.html ... -peak.html

Af the above, I would recommend the following asperhaps the best of the lot (in no particular order):

Nipple Peak
Hahns Peak
Sand Mountain
Devils Causeway
Flat Top
Lost Lakes Peaks
Big Agnes

Also, not on the SP website is the Sawtooth Range and Mount Ethel, both in the Park Range.

Thanks Scott! This is exactly what I was looking for (and failing to find...).
