Haven't done any research on it, but I know it helps with my hiking...

I think swimming is excellent cross training. I do two miles of swimming a week. *Nothing* builds the lung capacity like swimming IMHO.

So I say go for it! But as stated above, be sure to do weight-bearing cardio in addition to build the muscles you'll actually be using while hiking.

yeah, thanks for the tips on strength workouts.

I don't intend to rely only on swimming to get me in shape. I also do the stairmaster, treadmill et all plus free weights and machines.

Basically I just use swimming as a means of building my lung capacity. Since I'm only 500 feet ASL I figure I need to do something to get my body ready for "O2 deprevation" if you will.

Sounds like there are others out there that swim also.
