14ers: Pick a number, 53-60?

Postby Craig Cook » Wed May 25, 2011 6:36 pm

The list here on 14ers.com lists 58, but when I looked at the link for Gerry Roach's book 14ers book, it says "all 56". Are there two that don't technically count? If so, which two are they?

Edited to add other numbers that are popping up

14ers.com's list of 58 is based on the 53 Fourteeners that qualify as independent peaks under the 300-foot prominence rule plus five Fourteeners that are named by the USGS, but do not technically qualify as independent peaks (would technically be sub-peaks of the higher peaks next to it) -- North Maroon, N. Eolus, Conundrum Peak, El Diente, and Mt. Cameron. If you only consider Fourteeners as being peaks under the 300-foot topographic prominence rule, then there are 53. In many lists, North Maroon, El Diente, and Conundrum are still listed because they are prominent peaks in of of themselves, but do not technically qualify.

Awesome - thank you.

So I take it N. Eolus and Mt. Cameron are the two not included in Roach's book?

Actually, in Roach's 3rd Edition, North Eolus is the only peak that's listed as "Extra Credit". The other four have their own separate sections in the guide.

Thank goodness this one's 5 feet shy! Or else it might be very discouraging for us non-technical climbers to complete the 14ers...

Then again, looking at the Spire in'spires' me to take climbing classes.

Then again, the CMC, the state of CO, and the USGS "official' list includes only 54 14ers.

Well, they better get with the times. And the data. :D
There's an "official" USGS list of 14ers?

Actually it has been reassessed and is listed as 14,000 even now if I'm not mistaken. Personally I think it's clearly not it's own mountain no matter if it's over or under 14k so it stays off my list...
