Tip generously as well -- go above the guidelines or at least use the max. Sure it might cost you $100 or $200 extra -- but these porters are carrying up your stuff for you for 5-7 days and they get like $60 total. Splurge and give a little more than they expect you to give - you won't regret it and it'll help them more than you think. Also, if you have stuff you don't absolutely need - give it away. When you donate to Goodwill or Arc here, you don't know, your stuff may get thrown away. Whatever you give away over there WILL GET USED until it is near worthless. Give give give.

I have lived in Africa and will confirm this suggestion. I would recommend packing heavily with clothes, (usually they don't need winter clothes although you would be surprised what they where inspite of the heat.) leave as much clothes as you can on your way back and exchange all the luggage space with hand made crafts from that area. you help them double, and its nice to have the handcrafted items both as gifts and for your self as memories. treating the locals with dignity and appreciation (but not condescension with giving) usually will bring the best memories of your trip.
