Fire danger prevented fireworks where I live, but I guess Mexico has some!

Yeah, I was in Mexico City for work in June and we got rocked with a pretty good 5.9 earthquake. I'm no geologist, but it's obvious that Popo blows right after the big quakes.

I wonder if Izta can be climbed during Popo's eruption cycles?

Pretty cool. This will definitely give anyone climbing Izta, a bit more excitement (assuming they are allowing permits while the eruption is happening...)

This is interesting. Even during "normal" times you can smell the sulfur from Popo while on Ixta.

Good pictures! I remember sitting on Ixta very early in the AM in late 1996. Nothing was coming out of Popo at the time, but ash started spewing in a couple hours. I took pictures of both; not sure where they're at now. I was planning to run them in the CMC high altitude newsletter with a caption "volcano on day shift." But never did.

There was a layer of ash in the motel parking lot down in Amecameca and ash on most of the route on Ixta. I cleaned my boots really good when I got home, but still had ash seeping out from tiny cracks for a year.

In that 1994 photo, is that an observatory on one of the subpeaks of Izta?? I was there in Jan and don't recall seeing it... See photo below from Jan 1, 2013. Note also Popo is smoking a bit on this day also...

I think it was a hut for climbers to sleep in.

Yes, it was the Luis Mendez hut at the knees. Definitely not an observatory.
In the 2008 photo you can see the ruins, the frame is there but the panels are gone.

Inrteresting. When I eventually go back for Orizaba, maybe I'll do Izta again, it was a cool area.
