BAHAHAHA. Now, I don't know a lot about glaciers that exist around the world. I do know that I am confused as to how anybody could think that is accurate. Did a little research and none of the 37 or 38 (depending on where you read) named glaciers in Wyoming are more than 100 acres (much less in fact). Now, there could be 7 unnamed glaciers hiding somewhere that dwarf those in other countries....

I gave the ranger district a heads up about the website and they'll get it "looked into."

Cheers,

If Colorado can claim St Marys as a glacier then why not let Wyoming claim 7 of the largest glaciers in the world?

I thought about doing that, but on the other hand, it is much more entertaining the way it is.

Love the Winds, have been hiking there almost yearly for the past 20 years and been on some of those glaciers but given that there are glaciers just over this hill that are larger than then entire Wind River Range, hmm:

If it were true, it would make the WR's one of the "coolest" places in North America to visit.

Not to digress or become too geological, there are only few active glaciers in the Wind Rivers, regardless of size. Many of these are ice fields, either stagnant or displaying little downslope movement. The glacier "budget" has been negative in these mountains due to less available frozen precipitation over time.

Anyone got some photos of those famous "7 of 10" glaciers in this range? Would love to view them.

Crossed some Glaciers on Gannett, they certainly didn't seem very large. Even as far as glaciers in the contiguous 48 states I think Rainier would have most of the largest ones.

It's only Wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt but cool page listing all the glaciers in the U.S.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_g ... ted_States

Wonder if they meant 7 of the 10 largest glaciers in the U.S. Rocky Mountains? That I might believe. Gannett is neat mountain nevertheless: https://flic.kr/p/9byXsG

Eh, lower 48. The entire world. Just two words got mixed up is all. The visit Pinedale website claims 7 of the top 10 in the lower 48, which seems more reasonable, though I don't know what source they are finding these glacier measurements from. Quick google searches didn't turn up much.

This publication from 1987 though claims 7 of the 10 largest in the American Rockies, which would thus exclude Rainier I believe.
