I think the viral backlash and their notoriety is a far worse punishment than probation/fines.

If I recall Dean Potter never got punished for when he damaged delicate arch by climbing it. Sounds like double standards to me...

Dean Potter wasn't punished due to vaguely worded regulations. Regulations have been reworded since then to ensure that it's understood that climbs are illegal, except for allowed areas/climbs.

This is an interesting article on the matter from 2006. There was a poo-storm.

Mountains cast spells on me - Why, because of the way Earth-heaps lie, should I be Chocked by joy mysteriously; stilled or drunken-gay? Why should a brown hill trail Tug at my feet to go? Why should a boggy swale Tune my heart to a nameless tale Mountain marshes know?

Personally I feel like both the rock tumbling and the climbing damage are one in the same. Both showed blatant disregard for a natural feature in a "protected" area. Sometimes selfishness gets in the way of common sense.

I cannot even fathom why they would think destroying that is a good idea. I really hope that they are caught and an example is made.

Basically, it was for the same reasoning as the Boy Scout incident:

"'I asked them, you know, why they knocked the rock down, and the reply I got was: their buddy broke their leg earlier because of that rock. 'They basically told me themselves that it was a safety hazard, and that they did the world or Oregon a favor,' Kalas said"
