Cold thunderstorms?

Postby Scott P » Sun Mar 24, 2013 7:40 pm

Some of the mountains got some thunderstorms today, but what seems unusual is that it's happening during a spring cool snap. Check out the conditions (6 PM March 24) at Twin Lakes, for example:

Has anyone seen thunderstorms when it is this cold? We actually have plenty of thunderstorms when it snows, but usually it is in the 20's and 30's when that happens. Most of the times in the mountains when it snows in July and August, for example, there is thunder.

We also can get thunder during snowstorms in winter and spring, but usually it's when it is realitively warm and before the cold air gets here. I can't remember any thunderstorms with temperatures near 0F. Anyone else?
I'm slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

I remember descedning Mt Maxwell at the end of last winter. It was dumping snow and I was seeing these flashes. It was dark so at first I thought it was my headlamp reflecting off the snowflakes but then I realized it was like thunder or lightening. Pretty crazy.

Isn't the snow a bad conductor so lightening strikes are rarer?
