East Longs Peak Trail

Postby drhikerman » Wed Jan 02, 2013 8:46 am

Hiking up the ELPT on Friday. An update on snow conditions would be great. Do I need snowshoes?

I went up to timberline yesterday (nasty wind!) and summitted Lady Wash Sunday. The Longs trail is my default workout all winter. I've never used snowshoes on it. Like the Glacier Gorge trails, it's very reliably packed all winter.

Fortunately, not everyone does it this way so the trail has been widened and smoothed out by all the snowshoers over the holidays and is in great shape. Above timberline, the wind blows in some drifts here and there, but still no need for snowshoes. From the top of Lady Washington on sunday the Boulderfield looked to be open enough that the only reason to carry snow shoes would be for the extra weight and the extra workout.
