October Issue, Backpacker Magazine

Postby Nelson » Sat Oct 06, 2012 1:10 pm

The October issue of Backpacker magazine is the "Survival" issue. It is interesting with many articles of varied quality. The very last article by Ken Phillips, a long time SAR veteran, offers 6 guiding rules which are very provocative and worthy of all our consideration:

1). Don't split up.
2) Constantly assess circumstances.
3). Don't make impulse decisions.
4). Research condtions.
5). Communicate.
6). Pack a safety backup. (E.g. SPOT)

He expands on each point in a simple manner.

I highly recommend this article to everyone in our community.

Yes, with far too many "action shots" of that wanker Grylls.

The article you reference was quality though, I just fear the vast majority of Backpackers readership will never use them or need them.
The mountains - whose summits reach or exceed arbitrary thresholds for elevation and prominence - are calling and I must go.

I couldn't agree more about Gryllis.

On the cover it references "Survival Gear 8 Essentials" but I couldn't find inside where they identify the 8 essentials? Anybody notice where this is specified?
We did not think of the great open plains, the beautiful rolling hills, and winding streams... as "wild". Only to the white man was nature a "wilderness".

I think it was page 26:

1. Grylls with dirt on face
2. Grylls with more dirt on face
3. Grylls with less dirt on face
4-8. see adds for Bear Grylls outerwear.

I tought the cover was kind of amusing and the bit about making a spear tip out of a cell phone mother board :)
