We're planning to hike Quandary tomorrow - does anyone know if there is any snow on the route or top?

Oh man, that's not what I wanted to hear. What's the opinions on Little Bear? It's supposed to be sunny all this week, and the hourglass does face south. Should I go for it?

I do not have the snow experience to answer your question; all I can say is what I saw. By around 5pm it had cleared up and, as seen from just north of Alamosa, the north side of the LB-Blanca ridge had a fair bit of visible snow. It was a speckled pattern, i.e. about 25-50% of rock still visible beneath, along that area. I would also expect significant melting today and onward the rest of the week.

This is about noon today, from Pacific looking at the northface of Quandary. It'll all be gone in another day or two.

Given your experience I'd imagine you'd be fine. Hopefully it'd be dry when you got to the base of the hourglass but you'd certainly have to be prepared to handle mixed conditions in the hourglass (verglass, ice, some snow), which are are probably the most dangerous for that area. And go in knowing you may have to turn back if something doesn't feel right to you (only you can be the judge of that). Either dry rock with rope or enough safe snow to do a crampon snow climb are probably safer. Mountains will be there next weekend if for some reason you don't feel good about it.

I'm conservative out there on tougher mountains but just my two cents. Good luck and be safe.

Thanks for the info jdorje and jasayrevt.

I think I'd feel ok in the Hourglass normally since I've done a bunch of CLass 4 climbing, but I don't want to get in over my head with verglass and whatnot. Just have to play it by ear this week. Almost wondering if it'd be better to wait for more snow coverage. Well, does the hourglass get snow really, or is it more of an ice climb?
