Cordillera Blanca Emergency

Postby mcphats » Fri Jul 27, 2012 8:53 am

Reposting this from a friend's FB.

Any climbers in the Cordillera Blanca, we have an emergency situation in the Cojup Valley. 2 missing American climbers Gil Weiss and Ben Horne.
Your assistance would be very useful in getting supplies up to a search team on the SW ridge of Palcaraju Oeste.

Please contact Asa Firestone on Facebook if you have info. PM is you can't get in touch with him.

you should get in touch with some guide services like mountain madness. I was there with them last yeat at this time, so they might be there now. Brad Johnson's people too...

According to this thread on supertopo $ donations and time to review satellite images can help with the search effort: http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=1887836&tn=0&mr=0

I hope these guys somehow just got off-route and are headed down some other valley. We just left that range less than a week ago...at least the weather has been pretty good down there lately.

It's a slim chance right now. :( There steps ended at an avalanche site.....Hoping for the best. Gil was strong and motivated. Always psyched. Hits home when anybody you know passes away in the mountains....Mainly because it just shows how dangerous the mountains are along with them sharing the exact passion you have. And how fast they can kill. Life is fragile. Love on the people that matter to you because you never know when your time is.

Praying for a miracle here....

"I sit here in a coffee shop in Huaraz, Peru, planning another foray into the Cordillera Blanca, where the sense that one's life is in the hands of the mountains can be as blinding as the endless white glaciers, and a thirst for glory can darken our better judgment more than the blackness of night."

-Rumination by Gil Weiss on July 10 on the death of his friend and fellow climber Michael Ybarra while climbing solo in the high Sierra Nevada range.

Thoughts are with all involved. Hoping this ends well.

The bodies of Gil Weiss and Ben Horne have been located on there descent of the SW ridge of Nevado Palcaraju. Looks to be from a fall. Very sad and terrible news. Gil was totally psyched about revisiting the Blanca this year and very passionate about the mountains. Never knew Ben but I imagine it was the same feelings for him. Sad news.......It's been a weird summer with the heat, fires, shootings, and climbing accidents....be safe out there guys
